Since its inaugural edition in 1990, the tournament in Umag has grown into one of the most distinctive clay-court events on the ATP Tour. from the very beginning, it combined strong competition with opportunities for emerging players, a pattern that would become central to its identity.
Over the years, Umag established itself as a true launchpad, with players such as Stan Wawrinka and Carlos Alcaraz winning their first ATP titles here before reaching the very top of the game, while many future world greats — including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic — began their rise on the courts of Umag.
Over the decades, the tournament has hosted a total of 9 world No. 1 players and 15 individual Grand Slam champions — figures the tournament takes particular pride in, reflecting its legacy as a true proving ground of champions.
At the same time, Umag has always played an important role in Croatian tennis, with the majority of wild cards traditionally awarded to domestic players taking their first steps on the ATP stage.
Today, Plava Laguna CROATIA OPEN stands as one of Croatia’s leading sporting and tourism events, defined not only by top-level tennis, but also by a long-standing tradition of concerts, entertainment and globally recognized party events that shape its unique atmosphere.
