Umag — The Cradle of Champions

From its earliest editions, the tournament in Umag established itself as a stage where tennis legends, future world No. 1 players and rising stars crossed paths. Over the decades, the event grew into one of the most distinctive stops on the ATP Tour — a place where many great champions won their first ATP titles and announced their arrival on the biggest stage.

THE NO. 1 CLUB IN UMAG
As many as nine players who reached the world No. 1 ranking during their careers have competed in Umag: Thomas Muster, Marcelo Ríos, Carlos Moyá, Gustavo Kuerten, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Together, they spent more than 800 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings.

For the vast majority of them, the Umag stage represented far more than just another stop on the ATP Tour. It was here that they gained experience, built a winning identity and signaled the rise of generations that would soon shape world tennis.

It should also be emphasized, as proof of the tournament’s strength and demanding nature, that reputation and status were never guarantees of success in Umag. Names such as Ivanišević, Kuerten and del Potro echo strongly in this context, but none more so than Rafael Nadal — and especially Novak Djokovic,
who never managed to lift the trophy in four appearances. Particularly notable was the 2007 season, in which Djokovic emerged as the world No. 3, captured two Masters titles and reached the US Open final.

A TREASURE TROVE OF TROPHIES THAT CONTINUES TO GROW

To this day, the tournament in Umag has hosted 17 individual Grand Slam champions, who together have won an astonishing 75 Grand Slam singles titles.

For full context, it should be noted that as many as 46 of those titles belong to the sensational duo of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, the two players who defined the greatest era in tennis history. At the same time, the new leaders of world tennis — great rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner — already own a combined 11 Grand Slam titles, having also played the unforgettable 2022 Umag final.

And the caliber of players who passed through Umag does not end with Grand Slam trophies alone. Tournament participants have also won a combined 16 Olympic singles medals, including four gold medals, claimed respectively by Nicolás Massú, Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.

A special place in tournament history belongs to the players who won their first ATP titles in Umag — moments that would later become the opening chapters of remarkable careers.

Rafael Nadal won his first ATP title in Umag in 2003, capturing the doubles trophy alongside Álex López Morón.

Stan Wawrinka claimed his first ATP title in Umag in 2006. The Swiss star, who would later go on to win three Grand Slam titles and become one of the most beloved players of his generation, competed in Umag six times and developed a strong connection with both the tournament and its fans.

Andrey Rublev won the tournament in 2017 at just 19 years old, at a moment when he was only beginning to confirm the potential that would later carry him all the way to world No. 5.

Carlos Alcaraz won his first ATP title in Umag in 2021, becoming the youngest champion in tournament history. Even then, it was clear that world tennis had found a new star, although few could have predicted how quickly the young Spaniard would rise to the top of the ATP rankings.

One year later, Jannik Sinner won his first clay-court title in Umag, while the final against Alcaraz is today viewed as one of the matches that foreshadowed the rivalry of a new generation.
