The Spaniard finally claimed his first ATP Tour title, lifting the trophy in his sixth career final. The second seed defeated Ethan Quinn (47.) 7-6(4), 6-3 in the championship match at the Mallorca Championships.
"It feels amazing to finally win my first title after five finals," Davidovich Fokina said for the official ATP website. "It was a very tough match, Ethan played incredibly well. In the tie-break I knew I had to raise my level. I kept telling myself that this title had to stay in Spain, and I gave everything I had."
The victory was sealed with his sixth ace of the match. After calmly shaking hands with Quinn at the net, the Spaniard returned to the baseline before letting out a roar of relief and joy, celebrating the biggest moment of his career.
The triumph came after several heartbreaking near misses. Last season alone, Davidovich Fokina reached four ATP finals, and in two of them he even held multiple championship points, but was unable to get over the line. This time, he made sure the opportunity did not slip away.
Currently ranked No. 23 in the PIF ATP Rankings after overcoming injury setbacks earlier this season, Davidovich Fokina will be one of the headline stars at this year's Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag.
