UMAG, 11 March – The singles final of this year’s ATP tournament Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag will be played on Saturday, 18 July. The closing stages of Croatia’s most renowned tennis tournament will thus once again take place in an attractive Saturday slot, for the third consecutive year.
“This year brings a particular challenge as the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag takes place during the final stage of the FIFA World Cup. In the past we have successfully coordinated our schedule with major sporting events, for example during the Olympic Games. In cooperation with our long-standing partner, Croatian Radiotelevision, we have found a solution that allows sports fans to enjoy both football and top-level tennis,” the organisers from Plava Laguna stated.
Main draw first-round matches will be played on Monday and Tuesday, 13 and 14 July. Round of 16 matches are scheduled for Wednesday, quarter-finals for Thursday, semi-finals for Friday, while the grand final will be played on Saturday. The qualifying matches will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 July.
“When partners sit down at the table, agreements are easily reached. Since its first edition in 1990, the Umag ATP tournament has been one of the flagships of our sports program, and there was no doubt we would find the best solution. Viewers of Croatian Radiotelevision will once again be able to enjoy both top-level tennis and football,” said Stjepan Balog, Editor of the Sports Program.
Spaniard Davidovich Fokina to make his Umag debut
Following the previously confirmed arrival of one of Italy’s top tennis players, Flavio Cobolli, the organisers are announcing another big name – 26-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, currently ranked world No. 19, will play in Umag for the first time.
“It is a great pleasure for us to confirm the arrival of another top player for this year’s edition of the Plava Laguna Croatia Open. With the arrival of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the tournament will once again feature two players from the world’s top 20, confirming the high sporting level and international reputation of our event. Davidovich Fokina is currently the second-highest ranked Spanish player on the ATP Tour, just behind Carlos Alcaraz, the winner of the Umag tournament in 2021. He is an extremely attractive and competitive player whose dynamic style of play regularly delivers outstanding tennis and great excitement for the spectators,” said the Tournament Director of the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, Tomislav Poljak.
The Spaniard has reached five ATP Tour finals so far, four of them coming last season. He first reached an ATP final in 2022 at the prestigious Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. This year he will make his debut in Umag and immediately rank among the main contenders for the title.
Ticket sales for the 36th edition of the tournament are already underway, and tickets are available on the official website shop.croatiaopen.hr
