Titouan Droguet dug deep to earn one of the biggest wins of his career Tuesday night, when he upset World No. 37 Alexander Blockx 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag to reach the second round at the ATP 250 clay-court event.

Droguet, the No. 116 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, last week enjoyed a run to the final at the ATP Challenger event in Iasi and quickly brought his form to Umag. The Frenchman used plenty of drop shots to unsettle Blockx and saved six of the seven break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to earn the fourth Top-50 win of his career.

“Great win. I did [play a] very good tournament here last year and I like the conditions,” Droguet, who last year reached the quarter-finals in Umag, said. “I like to play late at night, and I feel good physically. I am coming from a final last week, so I did not have a lot of time to prepare… I kept fighting throughout the match.”

With his one-hour, 53-minute victory, the 25-year-old notched his sixth tour-level victory of the season. The next test for Droguet in Umag will be a second-round meeting with Luca Van Assche.

In other action, last year’s semi-finalist Camilo Ugo Carabelli advanced to the second round with a hard-fought 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-3 win against German qualifier Marko Topo. The seventh seed will next face Pablo Carreno Busta. Carreno Busta eased past Croatian wild card Matej Dodig 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes in his opening match. The Spaniard is competing at the ATP 250 event in Umag for the first time since 2016.

Argentines Roman Andres Burruchaga and Federico Agustin Gomez were also among those who won their first-round matches on Tuesday. Burruchaga eased past Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato 6-1, 6-4 to set a second-round clash with top seed Flavio Cobolli, while Gomez defeated German wild card Niels McDonald 6-3, 7-6(4).
