Tournament in the 30th edition continues Umag tennis history

Over the years, Umag has become one of the most recognizable tennis venues on the ATP World Tour, and the tournament in Umag has had the privilege of seeing some of the biggest tennis players in the history of the sport grow up on its courts. Consequently, the list of Umag champions includes former no. 1 players, multiple Grand Slam champions, Masters tournaments’ title holders and Davis Cup winners.

For years, the tournament has also supported many homegrown tennis players. Unlike many other events around the world that are in the same category as Umag, so far, Plava Laguna Croatia Open has handed its invites to Croatian players in 80 percent of all cases. Thus, over the years, these invites have enabled players such as Ivan Ljubičić, Željko Krajan and Borna Ćorić to achieve their first big successes.

Tennis legends on exhibition matches

The era of Umag’s exhibition matches began at the 25th edition of the tournament in 2014 when these exhibitions have become a tournament staple, giving it an added value and irresistible charm. Each year, these exhibition matches attract the legends of the world of tennis and sports in general. Even world-famous musicians have showed off their tennis skills at some of these exhibitions.

For the 2019 tournament program, the organizers have prepared interesting tennis thrills, where we will be entertained by the tournament friend Goran Ivanišević accompanied by various tennis legends and celebrities. Therefore, two exhibition matches are scheduled in the 2019 tournament program: on Saturday 13th July 2019 and Wednesday 17th July 2019.

On Saturday, July 13, the opening of the 30th anniversary of Umag tournament will provide us with a rerun of the first Umag final between Goran Ivanišević and Goran Prpić. It will be the perfect way to remember 1990 and celebrate such a great anniversary of the oldest ATP tournament in this part of Europe. The exhibition held on July 17, will be a rematch of the legendary Wimbledon 2001 final between Goran Ivanisevic and Patrick Rafter.

Goran Ivanišević as tennis ambassador

Goran Ivanišević is one of the most famous Croatian sports brands. He is connected to the tournament in Umag in many different ways, but their most important connection is – friendship.

Even though he had just one opportunity to play in Umag during his professional career, his final against his namesake Prpić started everything for him at Stella Maris. After the 1990 final, his career skyrocketed, and that year he ranked among the world's top 10 players for the first time. Today, years later, Goran is one of the people spreading Umag's feel good vibrations throughout the tennis world. The performances at his favored exhibitions, his relationship with legends like Andre Agassi, and his warmth and efforts promote the tournament in the best way possible.
