The list of confirmed players for this year’s Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag just got richer with another top-tier name! Croatia’s only ATP tournament, held for over three decades, will welcome Hubert Hurkacz — the best Polish tennis player ever, who reached an impressive 6th place on the ATP singles rankings less than a year ago.
"Hurkacz joins the long list of world-class players who have competed in Umag. His achievements clearly place him among the global elite — he reached No. 6 in the world rankings, has two Masters 1000 titles, and is undoubtedly one of the top players in the game," said Tournament Director Tomislav Poljak.
To date, the 28-year-old Hurkacz has won eight ATP titles. His first came in 2019, and he quickly climbed the rankings. His breakthrough came with the title in Miami two years later, and in 2023, he claimed another Masters 1000 trophy in Shanghai. His best Grand Slam result came in 2021 when he reached the Wimbledon semifinals. Along the way, he has defeated some of the sport’s biggest names — eliminating Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev in Miami, and beating Rublev again in a dramatic final in Shanghai. He boasts an impressive 18 career wins against top-10 players.
The Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag tournament, part of the prestigious ATP series, plays a key promotional role for the city of Umag, the Istrian region, and Croatia as a whole. As the longest-running tennis tournament in Southeast Europe, it has brought together top-tier players and tennis fans from around the globe for over thirty years. This year’s edition will take place from July 20 to 26, with the main draw starting on Sunday and the final scheduled for Saturday.
“Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag offers a unique opportunity to promote Croatia globally as both a tourist and sporting destination. With broadcasts on international TV channels, digital platforms, and the presence of global media, Croatia is positioned as a host of world-class sporting events and as a destination that combines natural beauty, sport, and hospitality. For Plava Laguna, this event is of strategic importance, allowing for strong branding on domestic and international markets and affirming our commitment to sports tourism development,” said Dragan Pujas, CEO of Plava Laguna and President of the Tournament’s Organizing Committee.
In addition to Hurkacz, currently ranked No. 28 in the world, other confirmed participants for this year’s ATP tournament in Umag include Swiss player Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam singles champion who won his very first ATP title in Umag’s Stella Maris complex, and Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo, last year’s Umag champion. Cerúndolo recently reached his career-best ATP ranking of No. 18 after a string of impressive results, including back-to-back semifinals in Madrid and Munich.
