This will be Edmund’s first participation in the tournament in Umag; however, he has already visited Umag as a destination. Five years ago, he was part of the British Davis Cup team that defeated Croatia in the play-offs.

“I’ve been to Umag as a sparring partner, which means that I’ve never had the chance to play in an official match. I loved the city though. I’ve heard only great things about the tournament and I’m looking forward to playing in it for the first time. I hope to be as successful as the British Davis Cup team was here in Umag,” said the 23-year-old Edmund, was born in Johannesburg.

After Melbourne, Edmund missed a few tournaments due to an illness, but returned to the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, where he used his chance to play to get back into shape.

“Kyle is one of the best young players in the world, and one of the new generation players who are slowly making their mark in the world of tennis. He has a fantastic serve and a great backhand and loves to play on clay, which is not typical of the British players. He will definitely be one of the favorites in Umag,” said the legendary Goran Ivanišević.

Apart from playing in the semifinal of the Australian Open, one of Edmund’s biggest achievements was winning the Davis Cup with the British team back in 2015. He will also be remembered as only the sixth player in the 118-year-long tradition of the Davis Cup to make his event debut in a final. As a junior, Edmund won two Grand Slam titles: partnered by Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva, he won the boys’ doubles event of the US Open and then claimed the same event at Roland Garros. He also won one of his titles in Croatia – in 2014, he won a Futures event in Zagreb.
