Paolo Basso was crowned in Tokyo two years ago the world's best sommeliers and yesterday at the Melia Coral Umag he shared his knowledge with wine enthusiasts on the masterclass workshop and wine tasting of Istrian wines.

For 15 years at the forefront of the European and world scene of sommeliers, Basso was a jury member in a number of worldwide respected evaluation of wines, such as Decanter, Mondial du Pinot Noir, Merlot and the Mondial du Swiss Wine Guide. His training to become a sommelier started in Switzerland and about the secrets of the world of wine he studied in more detail in Italy. Having studied the Italian, French and English style of tasting, with time he united it and put it together in a unique style that makes him today one of the most versatile sommeliers in the world.

The guests of the masterclass workshop had the opportunity to taste a range of six known Istrian wines, Malvasia and Teran, and Basso with his instructions and experience taught the assembled about the specific differences of taste and smell of wine and the techniques that are most effective to specify the properties of wine.
