Pablo Cuevas came to Umag as the tournament's first seed, biggest favorite and 2014 winner. None of that mattered to Gastao Elias, who played an amazing match and eliminated the Uruguayan already in the eighth-finals, after two hours and 45 minutes. Cuevas won the first set, only for Elias to show just how dangerous he can be in the second set. The third set was a thriller though. The Portuguese was the first to break his opponent's serve and get to 4:3. At 5:4 he was serving for the match when Cuevas showed his experience, broke Elias, and the set went to tiebreak. But then the Portuguese was more precise and the Uruguayan double faulted on match point.

The Portuguese good luck continued with Joao Sousa, who was the favorite in the match against the Argentinian Leonardo Mayer. The second seed finished the match in just two sets.

"This is a huge day for the Portuguese tennis. I'm not sure we've ever had two players in the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament," Sousa said, adding that he felt a bit sorry that it had to be Mayer on the other side of the net in last night's match.

"We are great friends and I'm sorry he lost. He congratulated me after the match but was happy as well as he revealed to me that he was going to be a father," Sousa shared the happy news.

Andrej Martin made sure the spectators witnessed yet another sensation in the Slovakian duel. He beat Martin Kližan, who had arrived in Umag as the Hamburg winner but ended his journey in Umag already in the eighth-finals. Finally, it was an excellent night for the Croatians as well: three of our tennis players will be playing in the doubles semifinals. Nikola Mektić and Antonio Sančić eliminated Carlos Berlocq and Cuevas, while Franko Škugor and the Italian Thomas Fabbiano beat Aljaž Bedene and Damir Džumhur. Unfortunately, Martin Kližan and David Marrero were too strong for our second duo, Tomislav Draganja and Nino Serdarušić.
