Already after the first round, Croatia no longer has any of its players playing in the tournament. This is the first time it has happened since 2013. In his ATP debut, Nino Serdarušić couldn't do much against the much more experienced Teymuraz Gabashvili, and Franko Škugor had to forfeit the match to the Italian Thomas Fabbiano over dehydration.

As expected, the outcome of the match between Damir Džumhur and Nicolas Almagro was more uncertain. After both players had won a set a piece, the player from Bosnia and Herzegovina showed more stability and mental strength in the third set, despite Almagro being the more experienced player. Džumhur first broke the Spaniard to get to 4:3, but Almagro quickly did the same to Džumhur and got back to 4:4. However, in the 11th game, Džumhur once again broke Almagro's serve and it proved to be enough for the win.

Martin Kližan continued his streak of wins after winning the Hamburg title just three days ago. The qualifier Enrique Lopez-Perez wasn't much of an obstacle for the Slovak who is at his peak at the moment. Jiri Vesely also won his match, while the Italian Andreas Seppi lost to the sixth seed Pablo Carreno Busta, despite the huge support he got from the stands.
